GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 65’s December

It’s amazing, the road to Heywood sports centre was clear for a change, with shiny new tarmac. As I approached, I could hear the faint sounds of the Eye of the Tiger Rocky Theme being played in someone’s car. That about summed up the mood of the Bury Relic players and supporters, for the final set of fixture had come around that could bring glory once again to the mighty Relics. Like last week with the over 60s, a single goal was the difference, but this time it was not about relegation but winning the division 1 title. The Relics were in 2nd place behind Manchester Corinthians. The Relics players, management and supporters all knew that only a perfect set of results and a high quality performance could deliver them the title. This was no easy task and first up were Salcom 65’s.

Bury Relics vs. Salcom 65’s. The opening fixture started off very well for the Relics, with John W quickly intercepted a flaky Salcom pass and tried his luck from several yards outside the area; the hard shot just whistled wide. Similarly, another interception, this time from Graham, also produced another good shot, but again was just wide of the target. From the resulting throw out by the keeper came the Relics first goal. It was a throw out far too close to Jomo, who quickly intercepted and rifled a shot back across the helpless keeper and into the net for 1 – 0 to the Relics. That certainly calmed the nerves; the Relics were playing good football, solid at the back with Tex and Bob. The next trigonometry set of passing by the Relics led to a Graham opportunity but his shot was saved by the keeper. The subsequent Salcom possession led to several passes, culminating in a shot that was wide of the target and nothing for Gaz to worry about. The Relics were in a passing rhythm now, like a metronome, and this created a chance for John W to have a shot but it was not accurate or powerful enough to really trouble the Salcom keeper. Following yet another Relics move, Bob was played in to be one on one, with only the keeper to beat; his low and hard shot shook the right hand post and catapulted the ball right across to the other side of the pitch. Although the ball was retrieved by Bob to keep the move alive, a goal did not materialize. Salcom tried again to make inroads to the Relics defence, but this was rebuffed by a stout and exquisite interception by Tex. Then, after several passes from John W and Jomo, the ball reached the feet of Graham, who held it up and waited to play a good ball to Jomo’s feet, who was now in an advanced position. A very tight turn and sidestep took Jomo away for the Salcom defender, where he thrashed the ball past the keeper to make it 2 – 0 to the Relics; it was a phenomenal all round team goal. Further play from both sides did not lead to any other significant action.
Final Score, Relics 2 – Salcom 0.

Bury Relics vs. Rochdale AFC Strollers. There were a few twists and turns in this game and the game started tense, with both sides trying to get some passing moves going. The first chance fell to Graham, who did a sharp turn but his shot was saved by the pink keeper. Rochdale fought back and had a half chance of their own but it was good clearing up at the back from Pete. Both teams were picking up the odd offence for running and contact, but not up to 4 fouls as yet. The Relics were starting to make a good footballing picture by fitting good passing moves together, this was evident by the cute back heel from Graham that put Jomo in a shooting position, but their keeper again made a save. The next chance fell to a hard working John W but the shot just rose over the bar. In the following passage of play, Rochdale committed another foul and it was a 4-foul penalty to the Relics. After Jomo’s successful spot kick last week, he decided to take the responsibility again. This time he did a perfect one step penalty, only to be denied by a save that defied the laws of physics. It was a good penalty but equally a good save, and it was still a nervous 0 – 0 score-line. Rochdale then went on the attack and won a free-kick just outside the area. This led to a decent shot and good save by Gaz, to keep the Relics hopes alive. The next Relics move saw good play from John W, setting up Jomo with a shot that clipped the right hand post (very close). The subsequent Relics attack saw Graham set up a Tex for a shot, but no joy again. Rochdale were now trying to assert themselves, pressing the Relics high up the pitch and trying to make openings to score, but a terrific interception and long pass put Graham clean through. He had a lot of distance to make up to the ball; he glided across the AstroTurf at high walking speed to get to the ball and fire a great finish passed a stunned Rochdale keeper. What a glorious goal to keep the Relics in the championship hunt! Not long after, the final whistle went to confirm the Relics victory.
Final Score, Relics 1 – Rochdale 0.

Bury Relics vs. Manchester Senior Citizens 65s. Bury played an excellent game here with precise and crisp passing and some great goals. The first started from a Bob tackle, where the ball was passed around to John W, who found Jomo in space, who then fed the ball to Graham. He took a composed, hard shot past the city keeper, to make it 1 – 0 to the Relics. City were doing some good passing moves now but were not putting pressure on the Relics goal. An interception by the Relics led to a multiple pass move that ended with John W in space to the left of the goal; he fired a cracking shot over the keepers shoulder and into the net for 2 – 0 to the Relics. Great stuff. In the next Relics attacks, Graham got into his groove by twice receiving the ball, with his back to goal, swivelling and shooting. Neither led to a goal but the second was hard, high and over, which smashed the fence so hard, it scared the birds away. A bit of a tussle was developing in midfield and as the ball was hit to the left, Bob was favourite to gain possession. However, Bob was completely cleaned out by a sliding tackle that started 10 yards away. The ref was quick to hand out a Blue card, seeing the City player leave the pitch. Relics made the extra man count by passing around the team, which put Jomo through, only to see his shot saved. Again, Relics created another chance, this time for John W, who shot just wide while through on goal. The game was in its last ebbs, when a chance was created for Bob, who took a left foot shot, that looked like he stubbed his toe, and unfortunately did not trouble City’s keeper. It caused Bob more trouble as he was now in a bit of discomfort. The game ended 2 – 0 to the Relics and the dream of glory was still alive.
Final Score, Relics 2 – Senior Citizens 0.

Bury Relics vs. Manchester Corinthians 65’s. Well it came down to the final game to decide this seasons division 1 champions; it was a game of winner takes all. It almost started with complete disaster for the Relics, as a stray pass across the back was intercepted by a Corinthians player and he took a good shot that was equalled by Gaz in goal. Following the next passage of play, the ball went out of play and Bob was injured and replaced by Pete Shev. As you will expect from 2 good teams, both were passing around well and good play from Tex led to a Relics corner. The ball was then passed to Graham, who steadied himself, and performed an intricate turn to find space and shoot just wide of the target; you could hear the crowd saying “that was a close one”. Both sides were passing well but not finding the killer pass for end product. John W was playing well managing the game by keeping the ball off the Corinthians midfield, as at this point, a draw was good enough to be champions. Possession was still changing hands, until Graham again received the ball up front; with almost a carbon copy of the turn he did earlier, he tried again and as before, it was very close but keeper just saved it to make a corner. Then came the moment of glory for the Corinthians; a ball was passed from the Corinthian defence up to the Corinthians attacker, that bounced just in front of him with his back to goal. As the ball reached him, he swivelled and took a first time speculative hard shot that shocked everyone! It arrowed onto the left hand post, then across to the right hand post, before bouncing into the net; I could almost hear a commentator shouting “aaa-Ray-oooooooo!”. It was the Corinthians Man City Agüero moment, as that goal had sealed the league for them. The Relics toiled hard to get an equalizer but ran out of time and it was not to be.
Final Score, Relics 0 – Corinthians 1.

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 60’s December

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were the ancient Pyramids of Egypt, but nothing takes longer than to tarmac the road outside Heywood’s Sports Centre. However, who cares about such trivialities? This was the final fixtures for the over 60’s; today was a fight to avoid relegation, a battle of survival of the fittest. The Bury Relics have a trophy cabinet full of silverware, yet here they were on the cusp of relegation, only just outside the drop zone by a solitary goal difference. Could the mighty Relics hold their heads up high with pride? Or could it be they slope off quietly after the games for a shower, with their heads hung low with shame? Plenty of Bury Relics supporters had turned up to find out. Ken had been drafted into to manage the high stakes fixtures, and people were wondering if it would be a Dodd or Daglish type leadership. Under this intense amount of pressure, what transpired could not be described as anything else but extraordinary.

Bury Relics vs. Bolton (Bury were in Tangerine bibs). The first game that could determine their fate was against Bolton, which started with both sides trying to string passes together, with possession changing hands several times. Inexplicably there was a phantom foul on one of the Bolton players, as if the invisible man had made a two footed slide tackle from about 6ft; the ref’s whistle promptly blew and shouts from the crowd were “Should have gone to Spec Savers”. Anyway, Bolton quickly lost the ball and a chance was created for Jomo, who lashed the ball goalwards with a right foot shot, which the keeper saved. Play then switched down to the Relics end where Bolton managed to win a corner, and subsequently bring a good save out of Gary. Passing at the back from Peter and Tony created some space for Jomo on the right hand side, who fed the ball to Stewart. Wow, what a superb turn and shot! Before the Bolton keeper could react, Stewart had quickly turned and rifled a shot past him. What a sensational goal! Bury’s nerves were calmed a bit. Bolton were now trying harder and pressing the ball, and getting some possession themselves, with some half chances, one of which was superbly blocked by Stewart. There were some vital interceptions at the last moment from both Peter and Tony, this game was at present far from safe, and the tangerine running/foul count was increasing. In the closing stages there was some fine interplay between Stewart and Graham, which created space for Stewart to powerfully shoot, but his shot was parried back out by the Bolton keeper. However, Stewart had not finished yet and moved to the ball quickly and hooked the ball back over the keepers shoulder and into the net. What a crowd pleaser; a superb goal. The supporters were cheering and smiling at the goal, and with the knowledge that it was unlikely that Bolton could come back with a couple of minutes remaining.
Final Score, Relics 2 – Bolton 0.

Bury Relics vs. Wakefield. The opposition Wakefield were quickly into attack in this game, creating 2 early chances and bringing out decisive defending from Tony and a good save from Gary. Then the Relics took over and put together a good spell of possession and what looked like 3 touch in training, by quickly passing to players in space. Wakefield finally intercepted to make a chance but the shot went over the bar. Andy Rud van Rich came on as a sub and was quickly into the action, where a good move nearly had him clean through, only for the final pass to have too much on it. Wakefield were also making chances and it needed a good tackle from Graham to prevent a clear shot. A pass down the line from the back arrived at Andy’s feet on the left hand side, where he waited for support. He was being jockeyed by 2 Wakefield defenders, however this quickly became 4 defenders and Andy had to dribble his way out of trouble and make a pass, maybe like Messi would do. Following the next passage of play, one of the Relics Players decided to gesticulate to the crowd and shout “Loves it!” Not sure why he did that but it made for a good spectacle in any case. Although Wakefield had more shots than the Relics in the game, this was an even match.
Final Score, Relics 0 – Wakefield 0.

Bury Relics vs. Rochdale. Bury did not start this game well and were making some stray passes that the opposition were picking up. Then a move set up a Rochdale player for a shot, but he was just too late and had to travel into the area to get a shot away; the ref spotted it and Relics had the ball. In the next passage of play, Graham made a good tackle to intercept. Then Bury put some passes together and Andy built a chance for Graham, who took a shot from some distance out, which their keeper had time to get down and save. Rochdale then went on the attack, and Peter made a great tackle to prevent a shot. A bit of trench warfare was developing in midfield, when Stewart was body checked and sent tumbling; thankfully all was OK to resume. Graham had a shot, and then a good tackle from Stewart as play continued. Subsequently, out of the blue, there was a Rochdale counter attack down the left hand side. Unknown to the Relics, there was a rogue Rochdale player all on his own on the right, who was picked out by the left winger; in space and on  the run he managed to toe bung the ball past Gary for 1 – 0 to Rochdale. This could have quickly turned into 2 – 0 on Rochdale’s next attack but for a salmon like leap by Gary and a superb fingertip save. The Relics had one big chance near the end, with Stewart clean through on goal; he did nothing wrong as his shot was arrowing towards the back of the net, when a UFO like goalkeeper flew out of nowhere and saved the ball. In truth it was a great save. Final Score, Relics 0 – Rochdale 1.

Bury Relics vs. Champions elect Corinthians. If there ever was a lesson in total football, this was it. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe how good a Bury Relics performance this was. Relegation was still possible and the Relics were staring down the barrel of disaster. The question was, did the Relics have the balls to fight and perform under such adversity, and against the Champions elect? The answer was a resounding Yes! Fear was put to one side and fluent football played by the Relics. The early stages showed good passing from both teams, with some running offences being committed. The first chance to the Relics was created and executed out of nothing. The ball was played up to Graham’s feet, who pirouetted better than any supreme ballerina and produced a fast howitzer of a shot into the net. 1 – 0 to the Relics. The Corinthians were not happy and were quickly on the attack, but good defending from Pete and Keith were keeping them at bay. Stewart was in the wars again and was a bit dazed from another body check, but like a warrior he continued to play. The Relics were spraying the ball about everywhere and a good pass found its way to Jomo, who took a low hard shot that was like a guided missile, which flew into the net to make it 2 – 0 to the Relics. The crowd were going wild. However not everything was good as the Relics had committed the odd foul and they finally added up to 4, and it was a penalty to the Corinthians. As the Corinthians player stepped up to take the penalty, someone from the crowd was shouting to keeper Gaz, to keep his eye on the ball. And he did exactly that, making a superb diving save to deny the Corinthians a way back into the game. The next Relics attack saw Jomo set up Graham with a brilliant pass and the third goal for Relics was scored. Incredible scenes; Relics on the cusp of relegation beating the champions Corinthians 3 – 0. But that was not the end of the story as Graham again received the ball up front and was fouled by a frustrated defender, which meant a penalty to the Relics. Jomo decisively grabbed the ball (with no complaints from others) and strolled over to the penalty spot. The ref put his whistle to his lips, blew and Jomo proceeded to dink the ball over the diving keeper to make it 4 – 0 to the Relics. Scenes of delirium among the Relics supporters, and this was enhanced by Wakefield team players who were watching behind Gary’s goal; it was a cheer for every Bury touch or pass. The Fans were very happy to see the Relics survive and also amazed in wonderment at such a high quality performance against the Champions Corinthians. It’s notable that today’s 4-0 score line equals the previous highest ever league victory from the 1st of December 2017, when the Over 60’s beat Bolton 4-0 in a Division 3 game, but today’s result probably feels much better.
Final Score, Relics 4 – Corinthians 0.

Thanks to an awesome team performance by all the players, which was backed up by the staff and expertly led by Ken “the Daglish” manager. Absolutely sensational! The match day squad: Gaz S (GK), Tony G, Keith S, Graham W, Pete Shev, Stewart W, John M (Jomo) and Andy R.

A special thank you to Kodak Keith for the great pictures as usual, Mc-John-alds for his brews, and to all the enthusiastic supporters that turned out to witness this historic event.

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 70’s November

On a very cold but bright sunny day, Match Day 3 for the over 70’s was another day of dominating the three games but once again missed opportunities costing the Relics points.

The first game against Blackpool started brightly for the Relics with a Blackpool player wandering into his own penalty area giving the Relics an early penalty. John W stepped up confidently, his shot down to the goalkeepers left sent the keeper the wrong way, but somehow he managed to stick out his leg to keep the spot kick out. The Blackpool sigh of relief could be felt all across the ground, but it wasn’t to last. Shortly afterwards John W got the ball in a central position and a quick turn and pass to Jerry in the inside left position on the edge of the box, who fired a right foot shot with the outside of his foot into the keepers bottom left hand corner of the goal. The keeper had no chance with Jerry’s unorthodox strike,
Blackpool nearly equalised with a shot that hit the inside of the Relics left hand post, shot across the goal behind Eddie the Relics keeper and out of play. The Relics continued to press for a second with attempts from John W, Keiran, and Tex testing the keeper and a shot from John W thundering against the post.
Final Score Blackpool 0 – Relics 1

Once again the Relics dominated the next game against Rochdale, Keiran going close in the first minute but the shot was just wide. Further shots from Tex, Keiran, and Jerry also missed the target, and another shot from John W was very close, but just wide. Eddie in the Relics goal didn’t have much to do with not one Rochdale shot on target.
Final Score Rochdale 0 – Relics 0

The final game of the day for the Relics against Preston was another one sided affair dominated by the Relics but somehow Preston ended up taking the points, Early in the game Tex had a traditional thunderbolt that was tipped for a corner followed shortly after by a shot from Keiran that hit the bar fell behind the sprawling Preston keeper, spun back over the keepers body and into his arms. From a Preston breakaway Eddie was forced into a good save diving down to his left. Another breakaway shortly after saw Eddie beaten by a strong shot down to his left. Preston 1 – Relics 0.
Relics kept up the pressure and were rewarded from a flowing move from the back down the right hand side that saw a pass from John W to Tony P on the right hand side of the Preston box pull back a great pass across to Keiran who fired home. Preston 1 – Relics 1
The Relics continued to dominate with shots from Tex and Keiran going wide, and a shot from John W saved. Following another good move Tony P found John W but his shot was well saved by the Preston keeper. Preston got their second following a long pass out of defence to the striker who turned the Relics defender and shot passed Eddie with a strong shot into the bottom left hand corner. Preston 2 – Relics 1
In the final minute Relics were awarded a four-offence penalty, John W stepped up but his shot was saved. and the ref blew for full time.
Final score Preston 2 – Relics 1

Well played to all the Relics, Eddy (GK), Bob, Keiran, John W, Jerry, Tony P, Tex, Dave Mo, Pat and Manager Keith S. Also to all the supporters that turned out.

As special thank you to Kodak Keith for the great pictures.

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 65’s November

The Relics over 65’s started Match Day 3 top of the league, four points clear of Manchester Corinthians. On a tough day, with all games played in horrible cold drizzle, the Relics continued their unbeaten season but couldn’t maintain their league leading position over Corinthians who have got stronger every month.

The Relics dominated their first game of the day against Salcom, but couldn’t turn the domination into goals. The Relics went 1 – 0 up early on with a fantastic ball from Gaz in the Relics goal found Graham W on the edge of the Salcom area his quick turn and left footed shot across the Salcom keeper into the far corner put the Relics in front. Despite maintaining the pressure with numerous shots from Graham W, John W, and Tex the Relics were kept out until a stinging shot from Graham was parried out by the Salcom keeper straight into the path of Tex who smashed a ferocious shot passed the keeper to make it 2 – 0 to the Relics. A lapse in concentration late in the game let Salcom in to make it 2 – 1.
Final Score Relics 2 – Salcom 1

The second game of the day against Rochdale was a close game with not many chances to either side Gaz made a great save early on tipping the ball around the post before the Relics put the Rochdale goalkeeper under pressure with a trio of shots from Graham W, and John W that were kept out.
Final Score Relics 0 – Rochdale 0

Next up for the Relics were Manchester Senior Citizens which was another cagey encounter where the Relics were on top for most of the game with shots early on from Bob D and Graham W saved by the Citizen’s keeper. Tex and John W both had shots that fizzed past the post and, following a superb pass out from Gaz, John W had a shot saved by the Citizen’s keeper. Despite the pressure the Relics couldn’t break the deadlock.
Final Score Relics 0 – Citizens 0

The final game of the day was a top of the table clash against Manchester Corinthians who had won their earlier three games on the day and were pressing the Relics for top spot in the table. Both teams seemed to cancel each other out with not many chances falling to either side although the Relics had a couple of great chances with shots that were just wide of the Corinthian’s goal. Corinthians themselves had a chance late on in the game but Gaz pulled off a superb left handed finger tip save to push the ball onto the bar. The last few minutes saw Corinthians playing keep-ball, seemingly playing for the draw.
Final Score Relics 0 – Corinthians 0

The Relics played well in all the games and maintained their unbeaten record for the season. The discipline was excellent with not many free kicks, and no penalties conceded. Well done to all the players:– Gaz (gk), Graham W, Pete Shev, Bob D, Tex, John W, Keith H, and Manager Keiran. Also to Dr John for the post match brews in the rain. Thanks as usual to Kodak Keith for the photos.

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 60’s November

On a beautiful sunny November day there was not a cloud in the sky as the Relics over 60’s started Match Day 3 of the GMWFL Autumn 2021 season. Four difficult games lay ahead, Relics need a good day to get off the bottom of the table, but this league is extremely tough this year.

The first game was a scrappy game against Bolton, inconsistent decisions and lack of control from the ref meant more stoppages than action, with the ref seeming to lose count of the number of Bolton offences. Not many chances were made by either team, but Gaz in the Relics goal made a couple of great saves before the Relics were finally awarded a penalty due to the Bolton foul count. Jo Mo stepped his well placed shot was well saved by the Bolton keeper. In the last few minutes the Relics were hit by the four offence rule, but the Bolton penalty was superbly saved by Gaz.
Final Score Relics 0 – Bolton 0

Next up was Wakefield, this was a much better game with flowing football. The Relics had the better of this game with shots from Stewart and Graham W saved by the Wakefield keeper before the Relics were awarded a penalty on the four offence rule. Graham stepped up his shot left the keeper stranded but thundered against the post. The Relics defence was like a fortress restricting Wakefield to only three shoys, all off target.
Final Score Relics 0 – Wakefield 0

The third game was another tough one against Rochdale, there are no easy games in this league. This game was the most open game of the day. Relics were on top in the early minutes with JoMo shooting over the bar. Soon after that Andy Rich from himself free on gaol, but his thunderbolt shot cannoned off the bar. More shots from JoMo, Graham W, and Stewart were saved by the Rochdale keeper. Rochdale then started a period of pressure resulting in four shots which were off target. The pressure paid off for Rochdale when a Bury foul on the edge of the box was deemed by the Ref to be stopping a goal scoring opportunity, the resultant penalty gave Gaz no chance and Rochdale went 1 – 0 up with just a few minutes left to play. The Relics when straight on the offences to try to get the equaliser with a shot from Stewart being turned for a corner. In the last minute a great ball from Graham W found JoMo on the edge of the box with his back to goal, a superb turn and left footed shot beat the keeper. a well deserved equaliser for the Relics.
Final score Relics 1 – Rochdale 1

The last game of the day was against league leaders Corinthians. Corinthians took the lead in the second minute with a close range shot that gave Gaz no chance, Graham W shot wide for the Relics shortly after but the game was mainly a midfield battle until Corinthians scored a second in the last minute.
Final score Relics 0 – Corinthians 2

Well done to all the players:– Gaz (gk), Graham W, Pete Shev, JoMo, Andy Rich, Keith S, Tony G and Manager Keiran, also to Kodak Keith H for the photos.

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 70’s October

Another round of fixtures for the Bury Relics over 70s, on an October day that was a little overcast with a slight breeze but without rain. Travel conditions were hampered by road works but for the enthusiastic players, this was no obstacle as all were on time. This enthusiasm extended into the matches that saw the Relics dominate in all 3 games. The stats for possession, number of passes and number of shots were well in the Relics favour.

Bury Relics vs. Blackpool FC Senior Seasiders. First up were Blackpool in their traditional Orange strip. Early into the game, the Relics were passing well and Tex had a long range effort saved, when shortly after John W burst through from midfield that almost had him one on one with the keeper but for the ball just to run too far. Two close efforts for the Relics followed. Both sides were exchanging possession but Blackpool kept picking up fouls which led to a Relics penalty. John W confidently chose to take it and set himself. He stood motionless, one step back from the ball, and then confidently dispatched a side foot to the right hand of the keeper, who had no chance; 1 – 0 to the Relics. The Relics continued to dominate but were being penalised for tackles and the odd run. Jerry then made a good chance for Pete but his shot just went wide of the post. Blackpool were now having a few passes themselves and from one move, had a shot from the edge of Eddy’s area, but he was quickly down to make a save. The following passage of play saw the Relics concede a fourth foul and a penalty; the Blackpool striker hit it well but it went wide of the left hand post. A sigh of relief. The next Relics move nearly produced a second goal, where John W was in space to the left hand of the area, and his low shot across the goal hit the opposite post. A final Blackpool attack saw one of their players running clean through, and it was a one on one with Eddy, who kept his nerve and made the save. Final score was 1 – 0 to the Relics.

Relics vs. Rochdale AFC Strollers. The Relics went Eco friendly in their green bibs, and the start of this game saw both teams making multiple passing moves. This game seemed to flow as there were fewer penalty infringements than in the previous game. The Relics were moving the ball around well and it was exemplified by an 8 pass move that culminated in a fierce shot from Tex that just crept wide. Then John W tried his luck from long range but missed. Bob was having an influence on the game with his sharp intercepting and terrier like tackles, which was breaking up any Strollers rhythm. This was evident again when he made a goal saving tackle that did put the striker on the ground but no harm done from the fair tackle. Both Jerry and Keiren had shots go wide and saved respectively, but despite the Relics dominance, the Strollers defence stood firm and the final score was a 0 – 0 draw.

Bury Relics vs. Preston North End SW. The final game of the day was Preston and early on John W had a shot but surprisingly a free kick was given for an unknown infringement. Preston’s tall no. 9 was looking dangerous and tricky in attack, and Bob was using all his experience and guile to keep him at bay. However, as in previous games, the Relics started to dominate with their incisive passing and moving, leading to a Keiren shot which was saved. Another chance was made by the quick feet of John W; with a swivel to the side, he hit a shot just high and wide. The game adjacent to this pitch were having shooting accuracy issues as balls kept invading the pitch. However, soon after this the breakthrough was made. A defensive error gave possession away to the Relics and Keiren took full advantage by firing a low shot into the net, to the left hand side. 1 – 0 to the Relics! Eddy was then called into action twice as Preston tried to get back into the game. Relics made several more chances from Tex and Keiren but no more goals were made. This was a good performance, with the Relics winning 1 – 0.

Congratulations, a thank you and well done to all the Relics players/staff on the day An almost full squad of 8 Bury Relic players were available for manager Keith Swain to choose from; the all-star squad consisted of Eddy (GK), John W, Tex, Bob, Tony P,  Peter A, Jerry and Keiren.

As special thank you to Kodak Keith for the great pictures and to Dr. John for brews and giving the team diabetes (with all the chocolate). And to all the supporters that turned out.

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 65’s October

The Relics over 65’s continued their unbeaten run on the second match day of the Autumn 2021 season of the GMWFL. Exciting games, a disallowed penalty, 3 late goals and three goals in three separate games for JoMo, read on …

The first game saw the Relics dominate Salcom without having anything to show for it until the very last minute when JoMo scored from long range into the bottom left hand corner of the net. The Relics thought they had gone 1 – 0 up from a penalty midway through the game, but John W’s ‘goal’ was controversially disallowed for 2 steps.
The Relics dominated so much that Gaz in the Relics goal had nothing to do apart from organising the Relics defence like a general organising the troops, maybe getting himself a new nickname in the process ‘General Gaz’ 🙂
Final score Relics 1 Salcom 0

The Relics dominated the second game too, this time against Rochdale where JoMo scored his second goal of the day with a beauty of a shot. General Gaz again did not have a shot to save but spent his time organizing his defence. The game got a bit nervous for the Relics when the Ref shouted ‘You’re on 3 Bury’ meaning one more offence would result in a penalty to Rochdale, however the Relics dominance continued and culminated in a game of ‘keep-ball’ for the last 3 minutes ensuring the 1 – 0 victory for the Relics

The third game was a tough encounter against Manchester Senior Citizens who started the game well with a shot that fizzed past the post, Relics started to get on top, but a Citizens breakaway found a player free who rifled one past General Gaz who got his left hand to the shot but the shot was too strong. Citizens 1 – Relics 0
The game was then all Bury but seemed to be slipping away. As the clock ticked down JoMo stepped up in the last minute with a cracking shot for his third goal of the day and an equaliser for The Relics.

Final game of the day another tough one, this time against Corinthians. This game was played at a much faster pace, most of it played in midfield with neither keeper having much to do. Midway through the game the Relics went 1 – 0 down when a Corinthians player was free on the right hand side of the box, the shot giving General Gaz no chance. The Relics fought back well with shots from John W and Graham W testing the keeper but it looked like it would be in vain until a great turn and pass from John W on the edge of the Corinthians box found Graham W who’s powerful shot gave the Corinthians keeper no chance. Corinthians pressed for the winner and a deflected shot hit the woodwork and went for a corner. From the corner the ball ricocheted around the Bury goal with General Gaz pulling off a great save to keep the score 1 – 1

Relics loan players shine for Maccabi

The Relics loaned three players to Maccabi for their Greater Manchester Walking Football Over 60’s League 3 games on 14th October 2021.
Relics players Pat Fitz, Andy Rich and Mark T were drafted in to help the depleted Maccabi squad. They all came out with glowing accolades. Thanks to young Chris F for the Report below.

Well done today to the Relics who played.
You really made the difference for Maccabi today, and ultimately some good results including the dominant 4-0 victory.
Andy was the go to man throughout, all the play went through him and a goal there for his efforts. Mark was solid and composed at the back and played the ball out well when he actually got time on the pitch (which wasn’t enough in my opinion). And Pat the cat had a penalty save, and definitely kept the side in for the draw in the final match with some fantastic keeping.

Mike Dickson from Maccabi sent the following email appreciating our loanees …

Dear Keiran
I would like to thank you and the boys who played for us today.
All the our guys really appreciated the efforts of Pat, who kept us in all the games and Andy and Mark for their contributions.
It made a fantastic difference to our lads to go into every game thinking we had a chance of winning and to leave Heywood with heads held high.
Please pass on our thanks to everyone.

Kind regards,

Mike

GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 60’s October

What a fantastic day of skilled and competitive football in the sunshine; the Relics over 60’s heroes were back in action but were unfortunate not to get the rub of the green.

The action started with a 0 – 0 draw against Bolton where Gaz had to make some sensational saves early on but the Relics then settled down in a rhythm with plenty of shots. Pete was great at marking the opposing attacker and kept him quiet. Graham had a couple of shots that were just wide of the mark, and Stewart had a few shots saved by the Bolton keeper. Then suddenly the Relics had a clever breakaway, where Keith S had a great shot saved by their keeper. The deadlock could not be broken by either team and it ended all square.

Next up were Wakefield who pressed the Relics high and marked well and this restricted the Relics just to a few shots. Following a great shot by Andy on the turn, which just clipped the outside of the post, the game was pretty even. Wakefield were making chances and taking shots but Gaz was equal to them and made at least 3 good saves. However, unfortunately, Wakefield latched onto a throw out and managed to score, giving Gaz no chance this time. The final score was 1 – 0 to Wakefield.

The third game was against Rochdale and this was another close affair. Relics started well and had shots from Andy and Stewart but Rochdale also had shots which forced Gaz into some good saves. Midway through the game Rochdale had a really powerful shot that Gaz initially saved but the power was too strong and carried the ball over the line. Relics pressed hard for an equalizer but did not have enough time to do it. Final score was 1 – 0 to Rochdale.

The final game of the day was against the top of the league Corinthians but the Relics looked the better team. The Relics were on top for most of the game but without having many shots. Corinthians were playing hard and making too many runs and fouls, which led to a penalty to the Relics based on the 4 foul rule. Graham stepped up and took a powerful penalty to the stranded keepers left, which hit the post and rebounded clear. The Corinthians pushed for a winner late on but Tony G battled hard to prevent them. The final results of the day was 0 – 0.

A well done to all the Relics players on the day: Gaz (GK), Pete Shev, Tony G, Graham W, Keith S, Stewart W and Andy R. Also a thank you to the manager Keiren.

As usual a thank you to Kodak Keith for super photos and Dr. John for brews. All support appreciated.
