GMWFL Autumn 2021 Over 65’s October

The Relics over 65’s continued their unbeaten run on the second match day of the Autumn 2021 season of the GMWFL. Exciting games, a disallowed penalty, 3 late goals and three goals in three separate games for JoMo, read on …

The first game saw the Relics dominate Salcom without having anything to show for it until the very last minute when JoMo scored from long range into the bottom left hand corner of the net. The Relics thought they had gone 1 – 0 up from a penalty midway through the game, but John W’s ‘goal’ was controversially disallowed for 2 steps.
The Relics dominated so much that Gaz in the Relics goal had nothing to do apart from organising the Relics defence like a general organising the troops, maybe getting himself a new nickname in the process ‘General Gaz’ 🙂
Final score Relics 1 Salcom 0

The Relics dominated the second game too, this time against Rochdale where JoMo scored his second goal of the day with a beauty of a shot. General Gaz again did not have a shot to save but spent his time organizing his defence. The game got a bit nervous for the Relics when the Ref shouted ‘You’re on 3 Bury’ meaning one more offence would result in a penalty to Rochdale, however the Relics dominance continued and culminated in a game of ‘keep-ball’ for the last 3 minutes ensuring the 1 – 0 victory for the Relics

The third game was a tough encounter against Manchester Senior Citizens who started the game well with a shot that fizzed past the post, Relics started to get on top, but a Citizens breakaway found a player free who rifled one past General Gaz who got his left hand to the shot but the shot was too strong. Citizens 1 – Relics 0
The game was then all Bury but seemed to be slipping away. As the clock ticked down JoMo stepped up in the last minute with a cracking shot for his third goal of the day and an equaliser for The Relics.

Final game of the day another tough one, this time against Corinthians. This game was played at a much faster pace, most of it played in midfield with neither keeper having much to do. Midway through the game the Relics went 1 – 0 down when a Corinthians player was free on the right hand side of the box, the shot giving General Gaz no chance. The Relics fought back well with shots from John W and Graham W testing the keeper but it looked like it would be in vain until a great turn and pass from John W on the edge of the Corinthians box found Graham W who’s powerful shot gave the Corinthians keeper no chance. Corinthians pressed for the winner and a deflected shot hit the woodwork and went for a corner. From the corner the ball ricocheted around the Bury goal with General Gaz pulling off a great save to keep the score 1 – 1
Final score Relics 1 Corinthians 1
