The Relics over 65’s started Match Day 3 top of the league, four points clear of Manchester Corinthians. On a tough day, with all games played in horrible cold drizzle, the Relics continued their unbeaten season but couldn’t maintain their league leading position over Corinthians who have got stronger every month.
The Relics dominated their first game of the day against Salcom, but couldn’t turn the domination into goals. The Relics went 1 – 0 up early on with a fantastic ball from Gaz in the Relics goal found Graham W on the edge of the Salcom area his quick turn and left footed shot across the Salcom keeper into the far corner put the Relics in front. Despite maintaining the pressure with numerous shots from Graham W, John W, and Tex the Relics were kept out until a stinging shot from Graham was parried out by the Salcom keeper straight into the path of Tex who smashed a ferocious shot passed the keeper to make it 2 – 0 to the Relics. A lapse in concentration late in the game let Salcom in to make it 2 – 1.
Final Score Relics 2 – Salcom 1
The second game of the day against Rochdale was a close game with not many chances to either side Gaz made a great save early on tipping the ball around the post before the Relics put the Rochdale goalkeeper under pressure with a trio of shots from Graham W, and John W that were kept out.
Final Score Relics 0 – Rochdale 0
Next up for the Relics were Manchester Senior Citizens which was another cagey encounter where the Relics were on top for most of the game with shots early on from Bob D and Graham W saved by the Citizen’s keeper. Tex and John W both had shots that fizzed past the post and, following a superb pass out from Gaz, John W had a shot saved by the Citizen’s keeper. Despite the pressure the Relics couldn’t break the deadlock.
Final Score Relics 0 – Citizens 0
The final game of the day was a top of the table clash against Manchester Corinthians who had won their earlier three games on the day and were pressing the Relics for top spot in the table. Both teams seemed to cancel each other out with not many chances falling to either side although the Relics had a couple of great chances with shots that were just wide of the Corinthian’s goal. Corinthians themselves had a chance late on in the game but Gaz pulled off a superb left handed finger tip save to push the ball onto the bar. The last few minutes saw Corinthians playing keep-ball, seemingly playing for the draw.
Final Score Relics 0 – Corinthians 0
The Relics played well in all the games and maintained their unbeaten record for the season. The discipline was excellent with not many free kicks, and no penalties conceded. Well done to all the players:– Gaz (gk), Graham W, Pete Shev, Bob D, Tex, John W, Keith H, and Manager Keiran. Also to Dr John for the post match brews in the rain. Thanks as usual to Kodak Keith for the photos.
