50th Anniversary Congratulations.

They did it!, well done and massive congratulations to Relics player Dave Morris and his wife Denise who celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on 23rd January.
Back in 1971, the wedding reception was at Swinton, where they probably danced to Grandad by Clive Dunn which was number 1, and maybe T Rex – Ride a White Swan and Dave Edmonds – I Hear You Knocking before honeymooning in York.
Dave may have been keeping an eye on the football scores where Man City beat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the 4th round of the FA Cup.
They have 3 children Dominic, Helen, and Sally and 6 grandchildren Polly, Rosa, George, Jude, Lara and Daniel.
Congratulations from all at The Relics.

GMWFL 2020 Review & 2021 Preview

The Greater Manchester Walking Football League (GMWFL) has published a review of the 2020 seasons and a look forward to 2021.

The review covers the disappointment of having to cancel both 2020 seasons (Spring and Autumn). It also remembers players that have sadly passed away during 2020 including Bury Relic’s Dave Seel who died on 19th January 2020.

The 2021 preview covers the expectations of the 2021 restart once again being frustrated by coronavirus and the uncertainty of when league games will resume.

Tier 4 Cancellations

We don’t like to end the year on an unhappy note, but the latest announcement from the UK Government (30th December 2020) moving Greater Manchester into Tier 4 of the coronavirus restrictions means that there will be no more games or training until further notice.

Let’s be optimistic about better times to come.

Best wishes to all the Relics Family, friends and followers for a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2021.

Happy Christmas from all at The Relics

The last day of training before the festive break was started in a jovial mood when Mark turned up in his new head gear. Well, one way of keeping your ears warm!

Training Resumes on Tuesday 5th January 12:30 at Goshen, and on Friday 8th January at 10:00am at Radcliffe Boro

Enjoy the break and stay safe everyone.

Relics over 60’s come out on top in Corinthians friendly.

The Relics over 60’s overcame a tough Corinthians team in the first of the three friendly fixtures.
In the first game it didn’t take the Relics ‘runners’ very long to build up 5 offences that gave Corinthians a penalty, which was scored to put the Relics down 0-1. Relics equalised in the second half with a brilliant goal from Andy Q. Following a pin-point through ball from Tex, Andy mugged the Corinthians keeper into going down then calmly chipped in.
Final Score 1-1
The second game was equally as competitive. The Relics took the lead with another goal from Andy Q almost identical to his goal in the first game, another pin-point through ball from the back from Tex found Andy free on the edge of the Corinthians box and he slotted the ball past the Corinthians keeper.
Final Score Relics 1 Corinthians 0

The next game is the over 65’s at Heywood on 7th January 2021, ko 2pm

Tri-Team Tournament – Match Day 2

Day 2 of the Tri-Team Tournament finally got underway after a delay due to COVID-19 lockdown 2.
Hosted by Maccabi, the games once again were played in a good spirit with great respect between players and to the referees.
Well done to the Relics Whites who took the honours on the day, but only on goal difference from the Relics Blues. However the Relics Blues maintained top spot in the table after the two game days.
Congratulations to all the Relics players …
Relics Blues:- Gaz S, Graham W, JoMo, Keith S, Tony G, Bob
Relics Whites:- Eddie, John C, Tex, Stewart, Gerry L, Andy R
Special mention to Jerry S, who acted as roving sub to both Relics Blues and Whites.
Also to Relics players who turned out for the other teams:- Keith H, Peter A, Pat.
Pat in particular had a fantastic day in goals for Maccabi.
Also thanks to referees Keiran and Ken.

There is great banter and a friendly and sporting atmosphere from everyone involved with the club in all the activities, training, league games, and social events.
In order to maintain this atmosphere President Keiran Tilley has issued a Code of Conduct to remind everyone involved with the club, players, managers, coaches, supporters and spectators of their obligations.
The full Code of Conduct is on the Home page.

GMWFL Announcement. COVID 19 Update

The GMWFL has issued the following email regarding resumption of league games in 2021

With the governments new tier system in force until AT LEAST 31st March 2021 there will be no full league programme that month, unless the restrictions are lifted. If not, hopefully we can start in April but even that is by no means certain. However, with vaccines available shortly the long term future outlook is now more positive.
The problem at the Heywood Sports Village is in the numbers attending each league session, normally with ten teams at each weekly session, with players, referees and spectators this can be up to one hundred people and in the present regulations this isn’t allowed.
It could be that for the Spring 2021 season, we run a local league, in the three age categories 60+, 65+ and 70+, for teams in the Greater Manchester tier, i.e. Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. This would need to be run on a team home and away basis in order to reduce the numbers at each fixture to an acceptable level.
However we will monitor the situation and obviously keep all clubs informed. Thank you for your support and in the absence of our normal presentations in December have  a good Christmas and New Year.
