The Relics over 70’s and over 65’s were in action in the Manchester League. It was the first game for the over 70’s and the over 65’s were looking to maintain their winning start to the league. Match reports are below. For all the Manchester League details, fixtures and results see the Match Centre page here…
Relics Over 70’s 1 –Manchester Senior Citizens 2 The Relics over 70’s started their season with an undeserved defeat. The Relics were on top for most of the first half with the Citizens keeper making some good saves to keep Keiran and the Relics at bay. The Relics started the second half well, but a fourth offence against the Relics meant a penalty for the Citizens. The penalty hit one post, wet across the goal and hit the other post and came out, but the referee controversially gave the goal. The Relics were awarded a penalty for four offences from the Citizens, but the Citizens keeper just managed to get a hand to John W’s spot kick and as the ball spun back towards the goal the keeper managed to turn and grab the ball before it had chance to get over the line. The Relics went 0 – 2 down shortly after when a mistake in midfield led to a Citizen player breaking clear and hitting a strong shot that Stewart in the Relics goal had no chance with. The Relics pushed hard to get back and in the game and pulled a goal back with a superb strike and a well deserved goal from Keiran into the bottom corner. The Relics were on top trying for the equaliser but ran out of time. Another blow to The Relics was an injury to Pat who had to come off midway through the second half. Relics: Stewart, Jerry, Peter A, Keiran, John W, Pat, Tony P, Dave M, Bob D. Manager: Keith S
Ken receives his well earned gift from The Relics family.
Relics over 65’s 2 – Rochdale Striders 4 The Relics over 65’s were looking to continue their winning start to the league and started brightly with a superb early goal from a difficult tight angle from JoMo to put Relics 1 – 0 up. JoMo had a hand in the second goal too adding an assist to Ken who’s shot low into the corner beat the Striders keeper. The Relics could have been 3 – 0 before half time when Graham dummied the keeper to going down early, took the ball to the side and almost chipped the keeper but the keeper recovered to stretch a hand to Grahams goal bound effort keeping it out. Half time Relics 2 – Rochdale 0. The game went to pieces for the Relics in the second half, after looking comfortable for most of the game they let the two goal advantage slip. The Striders upped their game and at times it seemed like they had an extra man. The Relics had their chances but the Striders keeper kept everything out. Relics: Gaz, Bob D, Tex, JoMo, Graham W, Keith H, John C, John W, Ken. Manager: Dave M

Relics Over 60’s 2 – Club Kingsmaid 2 A terrific game saw a very strong Club Kingsmaid team come back twice to snatch a draw against the Relics. The Relics took the lead mid-way through the first half with a penalty from Graham W who’s shot just squeezed under the keeper. Club Kingsmaid equalised early in the second half but The Relics went ahead again with another goal from Graham W. Club Kingsmaid scored their second equaliser with a low shot into the bottom right corner. Gaz S had a great game pulling off a string of great saves, and The Relics could have snatched it at the death with a great through ball from Pete Shev that found Andy R free but his shot went the wrong side of the post. Relics: Gaz S, Tony G, Andy R, Andy Q, Keith S, Pete Shev, Graham W. Manager: Keiran
Relics Over 65’s 1 – Bolton Arena 0 The Relics over 65’s started their Manchester League campaign with a win against Bolton Arena. The Relics were the better team throughout and the winning margin should have been more. The Relics took an early lead with a fantastic strike from John W from the left hand side of the area into the top right corner of the Bolton goal, the keeper had no chance, great goal. However the game didn’t go entirely the Relics way as it took a brilliant diving penalty save from Gaz S to keep the Relics clean sheet, while a penalty miss from Graham W at the other end with the Bolton keeper pulling off another fine penalty save kept the Relics down to a one goal margin. Relics: Gaz S, Tex, John C, Keith H, Bob D, John W, John M. Manager: Dave M

Another good day for the Relics teams in the Tri-Team Tournament.
At the start of the day the Relics Blues were top of the table, 3 points ahead of the Relics Whites. The games were played in a good spirit as usual, but this was spoiled in the Maccabi A v Salcom A game where two players were sent off (one from each team) for aggressive behaviour. This sort of behaviour is not welcome at any level of football, and certainly not something that this tournament is about. Both the Relics teams Blues and Whites were unbeaten in their two games on the day. The Whites won both their games and the Blues won one and drew one, which means that the Blues still top the table, with the Whites now snapping at their heals only one point behind and with a superior goal difference. All is still to play for. Stewart W scored the winner for the Whites in the opening game and added another in the second game. Andy R scoring the other goal for the Whites in the second game. Keith S, Andy Q, and John W scored for the Blues in their win over Maccabi B, with Bob D getting a rare goal in the 1 – 1 draw against Salcom B. Well done to all the Relics players, Whites:- Eddie, Pete Shev, John C, Tex, Stewart W, Keith H, And R Blues:- Gaz, Tony G, Keith S, Bob D, John W, Graham W, Andy Q Special mention for player of the day again, – Pat – who played in goal for Maccabi B and was outstanding, making some great saves in both their games. Also special mention to John H, who played for Maccabi A and to referee Keiran.
