Manchester League – Over 60’s 24th June 2021

The Relics over 60’s went into their last group game in second place in the Group B table on 4 points with Corinthians Whites (4 points) and Rochdale AFC Strollers (3 points) hot on their tails. Second spot in the table, and a place in the over 60’s Plate Final, was up for grabs for all 3 teams. The Relics faced Corinthians in a tough game while Rochdale have the easier game (on paper) against bottom of the table Salcom next week (1st July).
A tough close game saw the Relics narrowly beaten 2 – 1 by a strong Corinthians team.

The game started slowly with both teams failing to gain any advantage. Midway through the first half Corinthians converted one of the rare chances. A really strong shot into the top corner gave Gaz no chance.

The Relics responded by playing some great football which was frustrating Corinthians bringing four fouls and a penalty to Relics.
Graham W’s spot kick was hard and low but just wide of the keepers left hand post.
Minutes later Graham made amends for his penalty miss when he intercepted a Corinthians cross field pass just outside the edge of the area and hit a first time shot into the net. Relics 1 Corinthians 1

Corinthians went ahead again when they took advantage of a Relics midfield mis-controlled pass to ‘run’ free and just beat Gaz with another thunderbolt shot.

Shortly afterwards the game was spoiled by a confrontation between a Corinthians player and Andy Rich, when the situation had calmed down both players received a 4 minute sin-bin punishment.

The Relics conceded a four-foul penalty, but Gaz in the Relics goal out witted the Corinthians striker and made a fine save from the spot kick.

Gaz made a few of his customary great saves and the Relics had a few chances at the other end. The Relics deserved at least a draw, but but the game ended 2 – 1 to Corinthians
