No roving reporter was available to cover today’s action so results only, and a comment from Keiran …
Well done to everyone at Heywood today, results weren’t good but the whole team gave everything, we can’t ask for more. Also includes Pat, the team manager on the day, who tried everything he could.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – Over 70’s clean sheets and unbeaten on the day.

1st Nov 2023
The under strength Relics over 70’s put in a fighting display on Match day 3 of the Greater Manchester Walking Football League (GMWFL) Autumn 2023 season.
Unbeaten on the day and 4 clean sheets, but the Relics slipped a bit on league leasers Manchester Corinthians.
Relics started the day second place in the table, 3 points behind Corinthians, but Corinthians moved five points clear with their 10 points haul on the day compared with 8 points on the day from the Relics.
No roving reporter was available to cover the fixtures so just a results summary for the day

Results
Blackpool 0 Relics 1
A four foul penalty for the Relics, slotted away nicely into the bottom right hand corner by John W, gave the Relics the win.
Rochdale 0 Relics 0
Relics were on top for most of the game, but couldn’t turn the pressure into points
Manchester Citizens 0 Relics 2
Two penalties for The Relics put away nicely by John W. The first penalty was awarded when a Citizens defender danced into the goal area while trying to stop John W getting a shot in. The second penalty was awarded when Keiran was chopped down from behind by the Citizens defender as he was through on goal, a definite DOGSO (Denial of goal scoring opportunity) that resulted in the penalty and the sending off of the Citizens defender. This caused outrage with the Citizen players and a second red card was shown for dissent.
Manchester Corinthians 0 Relics 0
Relics were on top in this tough game, but again couldn’t convert the advantage into goals.

Well done to all the Relics players Eddie (GK) Peter A, Bob D, Keiran, Keith B, Sir Pat, and manager Keith S.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – 3 games, 3 wins, and 3 clean sheets for the over 60’s Stripes.

October 25th 2023.
Three was definitely the magic number for the Relics over 60’s stripes on match day two of the Autumn 2023 season of the Greater Manchester Walking Football League (GMWFL). At the start of the day the Relics sat second in the division, five points behind leaders Ribble Valley.
A superb effort on the day from all the team: Gaz (GK), Ian McK (c), Andy Rich, Steve Hassall, Iain Dawson, Nev Kitchen, Ken Bond, and Mike Bartram, not forgetting joint managers Keith S and Sir Pat doing an excellent job from the touchline: resulted in the Relics climbing to second spot, level on points with Ribble Valley but second place on goal difference.

Relics 1 – 0 Wakefield
Wakefield games are always tough and close but the Relics started well with a goal from Andy Rich in the first half. Second half and Wakefield were playing well with the Relics giving away a few fouls which resulted in a penalty to Wakefield. The Wakefield striker struck his shot hard and low to Gaz’s left, but Gaz was equal to it, getting down to his left to pull off a great save.

Relics 1 – 0 Bolton Arena
Relics were on top from the start playing most of the game in Bolton’s half and Gaz not having much action to deal with. Mike Bartram secured the three points with a mazy dribble on the edge of the Bolton goal area. I think he beat the entire Bolton team two or three times before slotting the ball home for the only goal of the game.

Ribble Valley 0 – 1 Relics
Last game of the day was against top of the table Ribble Valley, Relics needed a win to keep in touch at the top. This was one of the best relics performances I have seen for a while. Plenty of talking, movement off the ball, and marking the Ribble players. It was still a tough game.
At half time it was 0 – 0 with all to play for. Relics secured the points from a penalty following four offences from Ribble Valley. A firmly struck spot kick from Ian McKinnon gave the Ribble keeper no chance and secured the points for the Relics.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 –Over 60s Whites Have One Of Those Days

October 2023
Bury Relics Over 60s Whites contested the second set of fixtures of their Greater Manchester Division 1 Walking Football league campaign on a cool, dry day in Heywood. The squad was Eddy (GK), Tony, Wayne, Keith S, Ian McCann, Kevin, Gordon and Graham with Ken as Manager. A frustrating day resulted in 3 draws and a loss which was a poor return considering the pressure that we exerted in 3 of the matches.

First up were Kingsmaid, as usual it was a high quality closely contested match. More of a chess game than a thriller in which we shaded the shots but no real clearcut chances were created by either team. 0-0 but we played excellently, especially, defensively.

Straight into the second game against Corinthians. This was another good game which we dominated with about 80% possession but we couldn’t finish our good play off with a goal. We were one close running decision away from winning a penalty but we were not getting any luck and again it finished 0-0.

Match 3 v Fleetwood was the best game of walking football that I have seen. Great team play, superb forward play, by both outstanding centre forwards who were thwarted by great goalkeeping, and a high level of skill displayed by everyone on show. What made it especially good was no running, contact or moaning as everyone had to concentrate on the opposition. 0-0 for the third match in a row.

Our final game was against Wakefield. Possibly due to our exertions in the previous match we started so slowly that we never gave ourselves a chance. They had a good chance after around 20 seconds which Eddy saved for a corner and they scored after a minute. We were then left chasing the game against a tremendously well drilled side who know exactly what to do when they go a goal up. Trying to force the play we eventually gave away a penalty through 4 fouls just before the end which was confidently slotted home. A 2-0 loss.

3 points on a day when we played so well in 3 matches was disappointing but in a league of this standard there are no easy games and every point has to be hard won. The players gave their all so it is onto Matchdays 3 & 4, both in November, with Relics sitting bang in the middle of the table 8 points off the top and 7 points clear of the bottom.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – three hard earned points for the over 65s

Matches played October 2023
Conditions for the game today were pretty good, without the usual torrent of rain and with a bit of sunshine. The league reiterated that running was not going to be tolerated and referees were going to be vigilant. The over 65s were flying in their last set of fixtures that put them top of the league. Could Relics maintain their lofty position? The team today was different to last time but was still full of quality players and Preston were their first opponents.

The final result was a 1-1 draw.

Goal: A brilliant goal by Dave that involved quick thinking and reactions, to get to the ball and toe-poke it across the stranded keeper and into the far corner. The keeper claimed it was inside the area but as you can see on the video, his toe makes contact with the ball outside the area; great goal to Bury. To see, click-here.

Goal: The equalizer for Blackpool; an outstretched leg just deflects a Bury pass astray to a Blackpool player, who passes to another; he moves forward and hits a good strike wide of Eddy. To see, click-here.
Result; Bury Relics Over 65’s 1 – 1 Blackpool SS

Three points earned on the day. However, plenty of hard work was given from all the players in that performance, with Ken B orchestrating the team selection and tactics. Some days you don’t get the rub of the green; eg Tex hit the post with a pile-driver, and that could have meant 3 points against Blackpool. Also, Eddy had no chance with either of the goals conceded, they were just so precisely hit shots, and one also included some running. The squad on the day: Tex (C), Eddy (GK), Pete S, Ian Mc, Dave, Alan B and Tony G. Manager was Ken B, with Keiren and Sir Pat in support. GMWFL Autumn 2023 – Over 70’s Guts it out.

4th October 2023.

Bury Relics Over 70’s went into their second set of fixtures of the Greater Manchester Division 1 Walking Football league campaign struggling to field 6 players due to holidays, injury and suspension.

The patched up squad was Eddy (GK), Tex, Bob, Pat, Tony, Keith B, JoMo and Ken with Keith the Kit Man as Manager, Dave (injured) as Assistant Manager plus Kodak Keith & Watford Mark in attendance.

A gutsy day resulted in 1 win, 1 defeat and 2 draws which was a great return considering that JoMo and Ken were not really fit to play and Keith, Tony and Pat were all to some extent short of full match fitness.

First up were Blackpool. I have to admit that my main concern was knowing the location of the defibrillator and what we could use as a makeshift stretcher if we pushed it to the limit. Keith the Kit Man’s selection was based solely on the best way to manage the H&S of a banged up squad through 4 fixtures. Keith decided to test out JoMo’s hamstring and Ken’s knee right from the off. We started well, Bob and Tex were strong at the back with Ken giving us an outlet up front. From a well worked corner between Tex and JoMo, the latter knocked it across the box for Ken to blast it first time, high into the net beating their keeper all ends up.

Unfortunately, JoMo further damaged his hamstring making the fabulous crossfield pass and had to limp off to be replaced by the willing Keith. The only aim now was to keep it tight and prevent further injury. Blackpool, with nothing to lose, piled forward and got a bit handy. Pat and their No. 10, had a bit of a walking battle, with Pat taking no backward steps. We kept our workrate high and ground out the victory. Keith took a casualty report in the short break – a dejected JoMo, slumped against the fence, said he was out for the remainder of the morning and Ken’s knee needed a rest before resuming action.

Easy to pick the team for the second game against Rochdale as we only had 6 fit to play which came as a bit of a shock to Pat who was knackered but had to keep going. We again lined up with Tex and Bob at the back, a new midfield of Pat and Tony and Keith up front for Match 2 v Rochdale. We were doing well keeping them at bay when out of nowhere their centre forward, Chris, surrounded by 3 of our players on the edge of the D got a good, hard shot off which took a slight deflection through the forest of legs and rifled into Eddy’s top left hand corner. Eddy had no chance as he was unsighted and the force of the shot saw it in the back of the net before he had time to react. We had very little forward traction and were fighting a rearguard battle. Pat was in bits and I was starting to make a mental calculation of how quickly I could get to the defib and back as I was stood at about the furthest point away from it as possible!

Suddenly, JoMo had a Lazarus moment, and shouted on the manager that he was fit to go on. Keith, taking the attitude that a limping upright JoMo was a better option than a horizontal Pat, made a quick substitution. Oops, I had to make a quick brain swerve to work out if Dave’s manager’s coat would serve as a suitable stretcher substitute. We suddenly started to go forward with Tex and Bob managing to get some long shots, in after good set up work by JoMo, Tony and Keith, which was heartening but ultimately to no avail as we battled to a 1-0 loss.

Fortunately, we now had our 20 minute match break, during which we could rest and somewhat recover. Unfortunately, we had to watch our next 2 opponents City and Corinthians play out a high quality draw which gave all the Relics the heebie jeebies. With expectations low, JoMo and Ken volunteered to play against City, giving Pat and Keith a well deserved break. We kicked off, and, Wow, just Wow, we started like a train with their goalie saving a shot f…

With expectations low, JoMo and Ken volunteered to play against City, giving Pat and Keith a well deserved break. We kicked off, and, Wow, just Wow, we started like a train with their goalie saving a shot from Ken with his outstretched big toe which went for a corner after 15 seconds. The train turned into a steamroller as we absolutely battered them from thereon in. JoMo gave a masterclass in how to play hobbling football, with Ken finding space all over the top of the pitch and Tony was now realising that he had let himself in for more than he bargained for with another all action midfield performance. Everybody was getting shots off as we peppered their goal, including our 2 top class defenders Bob and Tex who were snuffing out any City attacks before they got into our final third. Ken scored another cracker which came out from the City keeper’s good save but the ref gave the decision against him for the ball not coming fully out the box. Extremely harsh as that would have given us the victory that our performance merited but the best 0-0 draw I have seen.

Another fitness check revealed that Ken’s knee had given way twice in the match and it needed time to recover. JoMo decided to carry on in pain so we went into the final match against Corinthians with the tried and tested defence of Eddy in net with Tex and Bob patrolling the back line, JoMo and Tony in the middle and Keith B up front. We started strongly again and were generally solid but the match time was beginning to tell and we were tiring as it went on. Corinthians were being restricted to long range shots, one of which was fired in low which Eddy saved excellently with his foot over the bar. Ken, volunteered to go back on to give Keith a rest for the last 5 minutes. He gave us a fresh leg and we pushed for a winner. Chances came and went but we couldn’t get past their quality keeper. 0-0 again.

I was honoured to watch such a show of guts, determination, and team spirit. I could not believe how we rebounded from the Rochdale defeat to put in such strong performances against top level opposition. Everybody played their massive part in securing 5 points against the odds in a huge collective effort.
Thanks to Ian McC for the report.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – Over 60’s Stripes 4 points

27th September 2023
The Relics over 60’s Stripes started their GMWFL Autumn 2023 season with a tough game against Wakefield. No goals for either team in the first half, with both sides having chances but being foiled by some good goalkeeping from both teams.
The second half started with a goal for the Relics from a superb shot from Ian. Wakefield fought back and equalised shortly after following some good passing.
The Relics kept pressing and looked the better team. Wakefield were building up the foul count and inevitably gave away a penalty under the four-foul rule.Ian stepped up and blasted the ball into the net 2-1 to the Relics.
The ref blew for the kick off to be taken and then immediately blew full time.
Overall a deserved victory 2-1 victory for the Relics.

The second game was a good competitive game against Bolton, Again the Relics looked the better side with Kodak Keith having some great chances but being foiled by the Bolton.
Similarly Sir Pat the Cat was making some exceptional saves at the other end.
Final score 0-0

The third and final game of the day was against a good Ribble Valley team who had won their first two games of the day.
The game was ebbing end-to-end, wit the Ribble striker looking dangerous. An error in the Relics defence resulted in a goal for Ribble with a fierce shot from just outside the box. Half time 1 – 0 to Ribble
The second half was frustrating with the Relics struggling to get any rhythm going and Sir Pat pulling off some great saves. Final score 1- 0 to Ribble

So, a four point haul for the Relics on the day with plenty to play for in the next few months.

Well done to all the players Sir Pat (gk); Mark T; Steve H; Mike B; Andy Rich; Kodak Keith; Nev K; and Ken B. Also well done to manager Ken B
And thanks to all the supporters.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – Over 65’s off to a flyer

Bury Relics Over 65’s started their Greater Manchester Division 1 Walking Football league campaign on another warm day in Heywood. The squad was Keiran (GK), Tony G, Alan, Pete Shev, Gerry, Dave L, JoMo and Graham with Ken as Manager, Keith the Kit Man & Kodak Keith in attendance. A great first day resulted in 3 wins and 1 draw which was a fantastic return considering that we were missing our top international who was jet setting on a Greek yacht, our newly crowned National champion who had to stay at home to play Snap with his brand new deck of Red and Blue cards and all 3 of our usual goalies for various medical reasons.

First up were Preston. As always, in every age group and at every level, they know how to frustrate and contain us. We scored first, when Graham took the initiative after some confusion among the opposition, but played poorly in a scrappy match but fortunately managed a 1-1 draw after Preston equalised, especially, as we could have gone a man down.

The second game was against Corinthians. We started slowly following our disappointing opener and when we fell behind it looked bleak but it was the kick up the archie that we needed. Looking down the barrel of defeat we started to knock it about Relics style with great passing to feet and movement off the ball. Graham equalised after a good team move and you could feel the relief in the air. We relaxed and pushed for a winner which was gifted to us when the cardinal error was made of leaving Graham all alone in front of goal. As usual he coolly slotted it home just before the final whistle for us to triumph 2-1.

Next up were Bolton and we continued from where we left off, starting well with strong pressure exerted throughout. This forced the foul count up for the opposition until the inevitable happened and a penalty was awarded the Relics. After a disastrous preseason on the penalty front (33% conversion rate) it fell to JoMo to step up to the plate. He struck the ball perfectly into the bottom right hand corner giving the keeper no chance and us a 1-0 win.

We went into the last match against Blackpool with the confidence now flowing. We were on fire, playing great football and Graham bagged a brace for us to finish with a flourish and a 2-0 victory.

An excellent performance by all our players, especially considering the absence of 2 top quality outfield players and all 3 keepers. Huge thanks and credit goes to Keiran who, at short notice, threw himself fully into the goalkeeping job. He didn’t let the team down and his excellent, crisp distribution from feet balanced out his lack of big match GK experience.

A good start to the season.
