GMWFL Spring 2024 – over 70s battle on

April 2024 fixtures
Bury Relics Over 70’s went into their second set of fixtures of the Greater Manchester Division 1 Walking Football Spring league campaign unable to field 6 properly match fit players due to England duty (Tex), hospital duty (Gerry) and injury. The fit members of the squad were Eddy (GK), Dave M, Keith B and Peter. Those playing with fitness concerns were Woggy (knee), Bob (leg) and JoMo (leg) with Pat (ill) on standby, if absolutely necessary, but who went unused.

Ken was Manager, Keiran as Assistant Manager plus Kodak Keith & several supporters in attendance on a rain-soaked day. A battling day resulted in 4 nil-nils which everyone would have taken at the start of the day as it keeps us in the Title hunt.

First up were Tameside with Peter starting on the bench.  A very tight game with the Striders only having 1 shot and Relics having just two: a run (walk) and shot from JoMo and a Woggy shot after a clever 1-2 with JoMo. A deserved 0-0 for both teams.

Next up were Blackpool with Dave starting on the bench.  We dominated possession and had 8 good shots from Bob, Woggy, JoMo and Keith but their stand in keeper had an outstanding game keeping us at bay with the pick of his saves being a full length dive to tip a fiercely struck drive from Keith, heading into the top corner, over the apex of bar and post. Eddy didn’t touch the ball so the 0-0 finish felt like 2 points dropped.

Third up were Corinthians with Bob starting on the bench.  Virtually immediately JoMo pulled up and had to be replaced by Bob in midfield. We fought a rearguard action of the highest order as we survived 12 shots with Eddy keeping us in the game. We didn’t have a shot and only got into their half 3 times but produced a magnificent display of defensive football. All the players deserve credit but special mention must go to Woggy who took on the responsibility of holding the ball whilst we had possession and giving the rest of our players respite from the offensive pressure we were under. This 0-0 felt like a win but, more importantly, it deprived an excellent Corinthians team the full 3 points.

Our final match v Rochdale, saw Pat make the bench as JoMo unable to continue.

By this stage we were really struggling with our 2 midfielders , Bob and Woggy, hirpling with injury. The game plan was do not lose. Another very close match in which  we again had no shots but managed to restrict the Strollers to only 1 shot which Eddy dealt with comfortably. Another deserved 0-0 for both teams.

Overall, it was 4 hard earned points which set us up for the 2nd half of the season which hopefully will see better injury news as the top 4 teams in the league are all fighting for the Championship.

14 points Corinthians
12 points Bury Relics
11 points Rochdale AFC Strollers
10 points Tameside Striders Blues
2 points Blackpool SS

GMWFL Spring 2024 – Stripes start strongly

If global warming is true, then in the distant future Manchester will be a valuable city as it has plenty of water; Yes! It’s raining again. Although the Stripes just missed out on promotion in the Autumn by finishing runners up, a quirk of fate promoted Stripes to division 4 anyway because of a league re-structure. The new division 4 consists of 6 teams. However, on the day, another circumstance meant that 5 out of the 6 teams had a walk-over victory as Dynamo Roach were a no-show. The first game of the new season was against Salcom.

Final Result; Bury Relics Over 60’s Stripes 1 – 0 Roach Dynamos

This was a very good start for the Stripes, who at the end of day 1, are joint top of the league, just behind Ribble on goal difference. In all of the games aside from Ribble, the Stripes were in control and the better team, with only goals from open play missing. The Stripes played good football throughout, making several chances to score and also marking opponents while defending. Andy Van R’s penalty against Salcom was perfectly placed high into the net, and Mark E hit the post on 2 occasions with clever strikes. Mark T and Steve H had strong games in defence, while Ken B, Iain and Mike, all produced good attacking play and had decent shots. The importance of a good keeper was evident on the day, with Salcom’s keeper saving a shot from Iain, and immediately after, saving Andy Van R’s follow up shot with his legs. Wakefield’s keeper saved a Stripes penalty and Eddy made several good saves against Ribble, and 2 notable saves against Bolton. The first was when their striker made space for himself and took a fierce shot. Eddy saved but the rebounded ball resulted in an area infringement. For the resulting penalty, Eddy made a magnificent save to preserve a clean sheet for the day. This was a strong start for the Relics Stripes, where all players made a good contribution. If they can keep this level of performance up, they have a good chance of promotion. Well-done Stripes.

Team and management: Eddy (GK and C), Andy Van R, Mark T, Mike B, Iain D, Fast Ken B, Mark E and Steve H. Manager Ken B, and staff of Keiren and Keith S. Supporters included Nev, Watford Mark and Motherwell Ian. Keith H took the team photos and report by Dr. John.

GMWFL Spring 2024 Relics Team Selection Strategy

A message from President Keiran

As the new season is starting we are letting all Bury Relics players know how this season’s selection process will be broadly based

Due to our ever increasing number of players available on matchday days we are finding that we now have too many players for some league games and with this in mind we may have to keep some players in their own age groups for some matches.

That said, obviously in some circumstances we will have to bring players into different age groups occasionally EG. where players are on holiday/sick/Appointments etc!!

This will mean on rare occasions that some players won’t get selected on one day but hopefully over the course of the season everyone should get some games in at Heywood.

As most of you will know it’s very seldom when we have a full squad for any of our teams on any given day at Heywood due to the reasons stated earlier, but on the days when this happens we hope you will be understanding as we do our best to try and accommodate you all.

Regards
Keiran Tilley

GMWFL Spring 2024 – Tough start for over 60’s whites.

There wasn’t a roving reporter available for the start of the over 60’s Whites league campaign so we have turned to the Relics WhatsApp comments from Andy Rich. Thanks Andy.

1st game v Bolton…
If it had been a boxing match, I’d say all 3 judges would have given it to Bolton.
It was a close game though.
Final score Bolton 1 – 0 Relics

2nd game v Wakefield….
Wakefield have been league winners twice in the last 5 seasons and were a different class. In another tough game , the Relics were quite fortunate to come away with only a one goal deficit.
Final score Wakefield 1 – 0 Relics

3rd game v Kingsmaid
Kingsmaid were reigning champions from last season, and had just defeated Bolton.
The bookies would have given 10-1 for a Relics victory (Keith Swain would have given you 7/2). Still, the Relics were much the better team, and a 0-0 draw didn’t do it justice.
Final score Relics 0 – 0 Kingsmaid.

4th game v Fleetwood
Fleetwood have arguably been the best team over the last couple of years. This was the game of the day, ended up a draw, but how unlucky the Relics were, If this had been a boxing match, the Ref might have even stopped it, still Fleetwood do have a magic player up front (who scored twice), but we the Relics were much the better team.
Final score Relics 2 – 2 Fleetwood

In all, 2 points gained was a great effort by all the Relics players in what is by far the toughest division in the league. Well done to all involved. Gaz, Paul Webster, Ian McCann, Graham W, Tony G, Iain McKinnon, Kev A, Gordon A.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – Over 70s Finish Runners Up

Bury Relics Over 70’s went into their last set of fixtures of the Greater Manchester Division 1 Walking Football league campaign again struggling to field 6 properly match fit players due to holidays, injury and illness. The squad was Eddy (GK), Tex (returning to a pitch for the first time in 6 weeks after a hairline wrist fracture), Bob, Kieran, Keith B, JoMo and Woggy with Keith the Kit Man as Manager, Dave (injured) as Assistant Manager plus Kodak Keith & Watford Mark in attendance. A good day resulted in 2 wins, 1 defeat and 1draw which was enough to secure second place.

First up were Corinthians in a top of the table clash. We needed to win to put pressure on the league leaders in the hope of overtaking them. We lined up with the tried and tested defence of Eddy in net with Tex and Bob patrolling the back line, JoMo and Woggy in the middle and Keiran up front. Unfortunately, it looked like the pressure was on us as we started poorly and got worse ending up with no shots on goal. Corinthians got a shot in quickly and had us on the ropes to such an extent that JoMo encroached in our area to concede a penalty. Fortunately, the Fantastic Mr. Ford foiled Ray’s spot kick attempt. Eventually, their hustle paid off when Woggy was bundled off the ball in midfield. The ball broke kindly for them and was toe-bunged into the bottom corner past a stranded Eddy. Corinthians then strolled through the remaining minutes to win 1-0 and seal the Championship.

We then had 2 options, crumble and possibly lose the runners up trophy or pick ourselves up and clinch second place.

Match 2 v Rochdale, saw the same starting line up with Keith B again sub. We started well with a Tex screamer flying past the post and JoMo playing a nice ball up to Keiran, who turned on a sixpence, fired off a first time shot which the keeper got down well to. Immediately, Keith B took over from Kieran and he got straight into the thick of it with a good shot just nicking the outside of the upright. We were looking good but out of nowhere they broke up the pitch and as we were outnumbered which led to Woggy running across the box to give away a penalty. It was blasted in and we were 1-0 down. We responded well to the setback and piled forward with nothing to lose and the constant waves of attack resulted in Rochdale clocking up 4 fouls and a penalty for us. Woggy despatched it with aplomb for a 1-1 draw.

Next up were Blackpool with Keiran starting on the bench.  We dominated possession and shots rained down onto their goal from all our players but their keeper had an excellent game keeping us at bay. Eventually, a Blackpool defender stepped into the area and again Woggy scored from the spot, this time low to the keeper’s right for a 1-0 Bury win.

Our final match of the season was against Manchester Citizens. Within 15 seconds, Woggy intercepted a loose pass and slotted away a daisy cutter past the keeper’s outstretched leg. An entertaining game ensued as City gave as good as they got but Eddy kept a clean sheet for Bury to run out 1-0 victors.

It was a good end to the season which had been severely disrupted throughout by injury, illness and suspension but we kept on fighting time after time. Corinthians were deserved Champions but I am certain that the Spring season will see a revitalised Relics squad contend again.

President Keiran’s Summary of 2023. A view from the Top

A Very Happy New Year to Everyone.

After a very strong previous year for Bury Relics in 2022 the New Year began well with a superb presentation evening at Radcliffe Borough on 27th January 2023.
This was in some ways a false dawn as on 22nd February 2023 we sadly lost a very respected and admired member of the Relics family, Jerry Shuttleworth a key player in our successful over 70’s squad. Jerry played a big part in our over 70’s successes in 2022 and is sadly missed by us all.

The spring season in the GMWF league was disappointing by Relics expected standards with only our over 65’s getting runners up and the only trophy for our cabinet.

The autumn season was a little better With the over 60’s Stripes who had shown a lot of potential getting a much deserved runners up along with the 70’s who despite injuries and absences also managed a runners up trophy.

For me the other stand out from 2023 is that we now have two England players in the Relics squads. Along with Keith Bibby carrying on with his England Parkinson’s team duties Terence O’Rourke, our over 70’s Skipper, has played for the England over 70’s team and gained his first Cap in Dublin. Well done to you both, the Relics family are very proud of what you’re achieving

Also congratulations to Relics member Ian McKinnon who has successfully passed the GMWF league referees course and he is now able to referee league games (when not playing for the Relics of course)

I would like to close by saying a big thank you to all your committee members who work tirelessly mostly behind the scenes on behalf of Bury Relics.

Lastly to all Relics players and families thank you for being part of the Relics who will hopefully continue to grow in the same manor, supporting each other on the journey.

Yours in Sport, Keiran Tilley, President, Bury Relics Walking Football.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – over 60’s Stripes finish runners up

Cold weather was the conditions welcoming the Stripes to the Heywood Sports Coliseum. There was a buzz excitement around the team and supporters, as it was possible, with a spotless performance, for Bury Stripes to win the league and promotion. They sat 4 points behind leaders Ribble. However, in contrast and with a bad day, the Stripes could also finish bottom of the pack. The first game up for the Stripes was the team sitting in third, Wakefield, who were four points adrift in third.

The league wheeled out an abacus and scratched their chins for a while, and…… it was official, Bury Relics Stripes had managed to finish runners up by a superior goal difference. Congratulations Stripes, that is a great result and steady progress. There is a good spirit around this team and on the day, played really well against Bolton and Ribble. Against Wakefield, it was Eddy’s amazing form that kept Relics in contention with a series of good saves. “Mitoma” Mike B nearly scored a great goal by tip-toing past 4 of the champions Ribble team (made them look like Chumpions) and just for the goalie to save his shot. Motherwell Ian’s strategy of getting into an argument to gain open position was brilliant, and again his shot was saved. Andy van R’s supreme confidence of playing his penalty against a post on purpose, which was really a pass-back to Mark T. He started the goal-scoring move of 7 passes, culminating in Motherwell Ian laying on a pass for the waiting Andy to shuffle his feet and score with a low finish. Great move and goal. The comedy moment has to go to the Bolton defender who when diving to the floor, had to somehow do some Twister contortions to prevent any part of his body from entering the area. All these events are in the videos above. Well-done Stripes; listen to the applause as the captain picks up the trophy (click-here).

Team and management: Eddy (GK), Motherwell Ian (C), Mark T, Mike B, Iain D, Andy van R, Fast Ken B, Nev K and Keith H. Manager Ken B, and staff of Keiren and Keith S. There were loads of supporters and Keith H provided some post team photos. Report Dr. John.

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – Over 65’s Relics finish third.

14th December 2023
Final day of the GMWFL Autumn Season for the Relics over 65’s. They started the day in 3rd spot in the league and despite some good performances on the day they couldn’t improve on that position.

Relics 2 – 0 Preston Relics started the day with a dominant performance against Preston. Two goals from Graham Walton, one a penalty, gave the Relics the three points and a ray of hope that we could snatch second place in the league.

Relics 0 – Bolton 2 The second game of the day put the Relics against top of the table Bolton who proved too good for the Reiics. The Relics had a penalty saved early in the game when Grahams shot was partially saved by the keepers legs but he manged to gather the ball before it went over the line.

Relics 1 – Corinthians 0 The Relics were on top for most of the game and deserved the 1 – 0 win, Graham with a penalty following four fouls from Corinthians secured the points.

Relics 0 - Blackpool 0 Last game of the season, and Relics were on top but couldn’t create a lot of chances.

Well played to everyone involved today, Gaz (Gk), Ian McCann, Gerry Luczka, Dave Lutkevitch, Graham Walton, John Wardle, JoMo, Tex, With Graham scoring all three goals today,

GMWFL Autumn 2023 – 60s whites have a bad day but division 1 status retained

Hats and scarfs needed for today, there was a chill in the air, and one side of the pitches was frozen. Someone else was also ice-cool as he was totally unexpectedly put in goal. The regular keeper was a no show, so Pat bravely volunteered to step at the last moment. Graham, the regular striker, was back from Australia and the rest of the team was packed full of walking football talent. The league table, at the start of play, had Bury third, where only a miracle would give Bury a runners up medal. In contrast, there was a definite possibility of relegation, being only 6 points ahead of last placed Corinthians. Kingsmaid were the first opponents and they were fighting to be champions.

Warning; It was a bad day for the Whites.

This is the pinnacle of the Manchester Walking Football League, and as such, the quality of the strikes and shots on goal are high, either perfectly placed, or with so much power that only a superb save will do to prevent a goal. Pat was not expecting to play and not prepared, so the performance he had in such a top league was brilliant. Here is a video of him stopping goals that could have made the day worse for Bury (click-here). Some of the football and moves that Relics produced were excellent, and with a bit of luck, they could have scored more goals. One positive is that the Whites had done so well in previous fixtures, that the clean sweep of losses today did not matter; their division one status was retained for next season.

Players Pat the Cat (GK), Graham (C), Dave L, Tony G, Keith S, Ian M, Wayne G and Kevin A. Staff: Manager Keiren T. The Relics were well supported and thanks to Kodak Keith H for his usual great photos; Report by Dr. John.
