The over 70’s started their GMWFL Autumn 2021 season with solid performances throughout the three games, but once again some strange refereeing decisions and lady luck went against the Relics.
The day started with a 0 – 0 draw against Blackpool. The Relics started well with a great shot from Keiran forcing the Blackpool keeper into a equally great save. Shortly followed by a typical Tex shot which flew wide of the post. The game was evenly match but the foul count was ticking over, and is wasn’t long before Blackpool had a penalty due to the four offence rule. The Blackpool spot kick was well struck into the bottom corner, but Eddie was equal to it getting down low to his right hand side to keep the ball out, great save. A few chances fell to both sides, but no goals and the game finished 0 – 0
Next up was a tough encounter with Rochdale where the Relics were on top from the start with Jerry’s shot getting turned for a corner by the keeper. The decisions of the match official were going against the Relics with Keiran getting frustrated and eventually receiving a Blue card sending off. While Keiran was side-lined and with the Relics a man down, Rochdale took the lead with a fine goal that gave Eddie no chance. Keiran came back on and just as the Relics were rewarded with a four offence penalty. Tex stepped up and put a shot into the bottom right hand corner sending the keeper the wrong way. Another Tex thunderbolt shortly after hit the post with the Dale keeper beaten. Rochdale sealed the game with a four offence penalty which Eddie had no chance. Final score Rochdale 2 Relics 1
The last game was a close encounter against Preston with the Relics on top for most of the game but Preston took the lead to go one up and held on until the very last minute when a four offence penalty was awarded to the Relics. Up stepped Tex again to strike a great shot down into the keepers bottom left hand corner, but somehow he dived full length and stretched his left arm to keep the ball out. The game didnt have time to restart and the Relics had gone down 0 – 1
Well done to the Relics lads who surely deserved more out of the day … Eddie (gk), Pete A, Jerry, Pat, Tex, Keiran and Tony P. Also to manager Ken.
