First up in Group C for the Relics was Club Kingsmaid who went ahead with a controversial first goal following a pass that, to everyone other than the ref, was overhead height. The Relics went 0 – 2 down when a mistake in midfield was punished by Kingsmaid. The Relics came out for the second half and dominated the game, getting a goal back from Graham W and looking threatening with every attack. However, Kingsmaid held on, the final score Kingsmaid 2 Relics 1
In the second game The Relics faced Manchester Corinthians and went a goal down 0 – 1 but pulled it back to 1 – 1 with a goal from Graham W, only to go down 2 – 1 shortly after. Once again the Relics dominated and got the deserved equaliser from a four-offence penalty scored by Graham. Things looked bad for the Relics late on when Corinthians were awarded a penalty but Eddie pulled off a great save. Final score 2 – 2
The third and final Group C league game for the Relics was against Rochdale who were on the same points as the Relics, so both teams needed a win to progress depending on the result of the other Group C game between Corinthians and Kingsmaid.
The game started well for the Relics when the Rochdale keeper strayed out of his area resulting in a penalty for the Relics which Graham W calmly slotted into the bottom corner. 1 – 0 Relics. Rochdale pulled it back to 1 – 1 with a penalty that Eddie nearly kept out. The Relics were on top throughout the game and a really well worked move from Stewart, JoMo and Graham W resulted in the Relics 2nd goal. Final score Relics 2 – Rochdale 1. which meant that he Relics qualified for the Plate semi-final coming second in the Group.
Plate Semi-Final: Relics v Bolton
The Relics continued the superb football from the previous two games and really left Bolton chasing shadows, hitting the woodwork at least twice before a superb passing move resulted in JoMo scoring the first with a shot that squirmed under the keeper. Graham W put the Relics 2 up following another flowing move from Stewart and JoMo. Bolton pulled a goal back to make things a little nervous for the Relics before Stewart scored the Relics third with a well deserved goal following a poor throw out from the Bolton keeper. Final score Relics 3 Bolton 1.
Plate final: Relics v Blackpool Senior Seasiders
The Relics started the game full of confidence after the previous performances and dominated the game, spending most of the game in the Blackpool half Graham W putting the Relics 1 – 0 up with a good turn and shot. The Relics were on top for the rest of the game and looked the more likely to score but couldn’t put the finishing touch to a number of chances. Final Score Relics 1 Blackpool 0
The Relics had made it out of the Group C group of death to win the Plate Final.
And just to prove how strong that initial Group C was, Club Kingsmaid (Group C winners) won the main Trophy tournament.
A massive well done and congratulations to all the squad Eddy (gk), Keith S, Tony G, Tex, Pete Shev, JoMo, Stewart, and Graham W who scored 7 of the Relics 9 goals on the day. Not forgetting Keiran (Mgr)
