The Great Escape

The Relics over 70’s team that staged the great escape.
John Wardle scores the last minute penalty that keeps the Relics in Division 1

Going into the last game day of the season (3 games) the Relics over 70’s were written off as certainties for relegation. Five points adrift at the foot of Division 1 the task to avoid relegation did seem impossible.

However the Relics defied everyone with a remarkable display on the day. Following the first two round of games the Relics found themselves just two points behind Tameside, their opponents for the final game, knowing that a win for the Relics would keep the Relics in Division 1 and send Tameside into Division 2.

The Relics were on top in a tense game that seemed to be heading for a 0 – 0 scoreline until the Relics were awarded a penalty in the last minute. John Wardle stepped up and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to secure Division 1 football for the Relics over 70’s next season.
