over 70s major gains and a shootafon

Matches played October 1st 2025
Bury Relics were sat in second place in the league table, 7 points behind leaders Manchester Corinthians, and 3 points clear of third placed Winstanley, after the last set of fixtures. A very strong team was selected for the day to try and put pressure on the leaders. The team consisted Ed (GK), John M (C), Graham, Ken Bug, John W, Tex, Peter T and Bob. The man with the clipboard, imparting advice, encouragement and picking the teams was Sir Pat, who was backed up by Keiren. Supporters included Keith H, Frank, Dr. John and others.

Bury Relics vs. Manchester Corinthians
This was an even game, both teams battling for possession and trying to make chances but the high-quality of both teams were cancelling each other out. Notably, Tex and Bob were kept busy by their sharp #8, who possessed very quick movement and a nifty turn. He had a couple of shots early on but the defence either made him shoot wide or Ed could easily make the save. At the other end, Bury created a great chance that began by a sharp interception by Bob, who passed forward to John M on the right. The transition from defence to attack was instantaneous and as a result, Graham was left unmarked on the other side of the box. John M was quick to spot this and passed across the box, where Graham was getting ready to shoot. This panicked the defender into rushing back and making a last ditch tackle that was deemed denying a goal scoring attempt. John W dispatched the penalty, with pizzazz, into the bottom right-hand corner of the net (a side-foot with power). Their keeper had 0 chance of saving it, a great penalty and ultimately this led to 3 priceless points for the Relics against top of the league.
Result Bury Relics 1 – 0 Manchester Corinthians

Their keeper made some good saves to deny Relics, who on another day could have had 10+ goals. It’s fair to say, they should have won this game, with 19 chances to score, to Rochdale’s 2.5 chances.
Result; Bury Relics 0 – 0 Rochdale

Bury Relics racked up 3 fouls cheaply and quickly in this game, so had to concentrate hard so as not to make a fourth offence for a penalty. They did brilliantly to do this and to get a goal to win it.
Result; Bury Relics 1 – 0 Winstanley

Aside from the Rochdale shootafon enigma of not scoring (someone used the term “Powder Puff” on the day), Bury Relics had a great day and fully deserved their 10 points reward. In contrast, Corinthians didn’t do as well, with their 4 points on the day. This shot Bury Relics to within a single point of Manchester Corinthians at the top, and reduce the goal different deficit to just a single goal. This is magnificent for the team, management and fans. It’s stating the obvious that a good day or a bad day for a team can change things drastically at the top, so hopefully the Relics can maintain their good form of today into the last 2 sets of fixtures. if they do that, they have a huge chance of winning the title. Go Bury Relics!!
