GMWFL Autumn 2023 – a good day for the over 60s whites, who earn a meritable 7 points

Matches played on the 7th of September 2023.
Arriving at Heywood on another strangely hot and humid day, not the normal cold and rainy event we were getting used to, in anticipation of a really tough set of games for the Relics over 60s whites. Every team in this Over 60s League division 1 is more than capable of winning the league, with little or no weakness in any team.

Bury Relics V Kingsmaid
Relics gave as good as they got in this game with no quarter asked or given by either side. Both teams had a few chances but with Eddy on top form in Relics goal, it would take something special to beat him.
Final score 0-0

Corinthians V Relics
Bury started really well and had several chances early on before Corinthians started to get into the match. Good inter-passing from the Relics produced a moment of magic for Ian to sweep home a great finish.
Final score 0-1 to Relics

Relics V Fleetwood
With the very dangerous Fleetwood striker Sam (twinkle toes), who is lethal with either foot, playing against Relics, it was given to Tony Greenall to mark him out of the game, which he did for the majority of the match. However, despite Relics having slightly more of the play and definitely more goal strikes (5 at least), Fleetwood had three good chances and twinkle toes scored two. Relics battled hard all the game and deserved a little more from it but it wasn’t to be.
Final score 0-2 to Fleetwood

Wakefield V Relics
Again, Relics were at it from the start against Wakefield, taking the play to them at every opportunity. Wakefield’s dangerous striker Kim was well marshalled by Wayne G and Kevin A and on this occasion, he hardly had a shot of note. With Graham showing some great hold up play and Ian Mc and Alan B running riot all over midfield, Relics eventually ran out comfortable 2-0 winners, with Ian Mc and Alan B both scoring.
Final score 0-2 to Relics

The only surprise was we didn’t get more goals, in an unusual set of games where Graham didn’t bag a single goal on the day but his contribution was excellent as usual. Big shout out to all the squad for some great performances but a special mention to Big Eddy who was brilliant on the day as he has been in the last three sessions at Heywood. A great set of results, leaving Relics second in the table with all to play for. Up The Relics!

Team and staff consisted: Eddy F (GK), Graham W (C), Ian Mc, Kevin A, Keith S, Tony G, Wayne G and Alan B. Thanks to Pat for managing the team, with support from Keiran.
